For a first visit, Marrakech and Fez offer different ways to explore a medina; Rabat and Casablanca fit an urban route; Essaouira and Agadir make coastal stops. Tangier, Tetouan and Chefchaouen work together in the north. Ouarzazate belongs to a different journey through southern kasbahs and valleys. Pick a coherent region before booking.

Which cities fit your trip?
This selection covers ten major visitor destinations, rather than ranking them by population or visitor numbers. Suggested stays below are planning choices, excluding arrival and long transfers. A seven-day holiday needs a shortlist: these stops are not one route to complete in order.
Marrakech: medina, gardens and palaces
Start with Jemaa el-Fna and the souks, then leave another half-day for Bahia Palace or the gardens. You can also see the Koutoubia from its surroundings. Check official ticketing before scheduling Jardin Majorelle. Allow two to three sightseeing days, and keep a long excursion away from your arrival day.

Fez: explore the medina on foot
Bab Boujloud is a useful starting point for Fez el-Bali. Combine lanes, craft workshops and a madrasa open on your dates, then leave time for Jnan Sbil. Chouara tanneries are often viewed from terraces: ask about access terms before going up. Two sightseeing days let you explore without racing between landmarks.
Rabat: the Oudayas, Hassan Tower and Chellah
The Kasbah of the Oudayas, Hassan Tower and the Mohammed V Mausoleum make a clear first-day plan. Leave Chellah or a museum for a second day. Rabat suits a one- to two-day cultural stop; group sights by area instead of crossing the city repeatedly.
Casablanca: Hassan II Mosque and the Art Deco centre
Hassan II Mosque, the city centre’s Art Deco streets and the corniche offer three different settings. Check official visiting hours and entry arrangements for the mosque interior. A full day can work for a focused first stop; add a night after a late international arrival.

Tangier: kasbah and Strait scenery
Explore the kasbah and medina on foot, then plan a separate outing to Cape Spartel and the Caves of Hercules. Both are outside the centre, so transport takes part of the day. With two days, keep one for town and one for the coast. Choose accommodation around your arrival, luggage and sightseeing plans.

Chefchaouen: blue lanes and the Rif
The medina, kasbah and Ras Elma give you a full, unhurried day. Staying overnight lets you see the town outside day-trip hours. Akchour is a separate outing requiring transport and a walking plan, rather than a neighbourhood of Chefchaouen. Check the route and local conditions before hiking.

Tetouan: medina and Mediterranean coast
Give Tetouan’s medina, gateways and craft streets a day. For Martil, M’diq or Tamouda Bay, add transport time: not every central accommodation has a beach nearby. Two days allow a town-and-coast combination instead of reducing Tetouan to a brief stop.

Essaouira: ramparts, harbour and Atlantic
The medina, ramparts and harbour fit a first day on foot. Save the beach or Sidi Kaouki for another outing, depending on wind and what you want to do. Two nights allow more flexibility than a Marrakech day trip. For surfing or kitesurfing, choose instruction around your ability rather than the listing’s photos.
Agadir: bay, souk and a beach stay
Combine the seafront promenade, Souk El Had and the view from Agadir Oufella. Give Taghazout a separate outing if you want to try surfing or stay there. For a beach break, allow three days rather than one night between long transfers. Check actual beach access and transport from your accommodation.
Meknes: monumental gates and Volubilis
Bab Mansour and El Hedim square are useful anchors for a Meknes visit. Check monument openings before building your day around a particular interior. Volubilis is a separate archaeological site outside town: allow transport and time there. A trip from Fez works when you keep the sightseeing list short and leave a return buffer.
What about the desert and kasbahs?
Ouarzazate and Aït Ben Haddou add southern kasbahs and landscapes. Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes need a longer route. Also distinguish Agafay near Marrakech from a dune trip: a sunset outing is a different journey from a night in the Merzouga area.

Turn your shortlist into a route
Before choosing hotels, write down arrival and departure airports and the nights you actually have. Our planning preference is two bases in a week, with another stop for ten days. Check rail routes and times with ONCF; for road trips, ask for a schedule that includes breaks.

Questions before you go
Marrakech or Fez for a first visit?
Choose Marrakech for gardens, palaces and a possible Essaouira stay. Choose Fez for more medina time and a route towards Meknes or the north. To include both, count the intercity journey as part of your itinerary.
Can you visit Morocco without a car?
Yes, by choosing rail-connected stops and suitable transfers elsewhere. Build the route around available connections rather than a wish list of sights. Check official timetables before booking non-refundable accommodation.
